Don’t miss the 13th annual Harbor and Seafood Festival in Santa Barbara on October 11, 2014, from 10 AM and 5 PM.
This event has a longer history in Santa Barbara than many folks realize. Originally called The Fishermen’s Festival, when it began several decades ago, a popular highlight of the day was the “Blessing of the Fleet,” where boats, elaborately decorated with flowers and streamers, were filled with people and paraded through the harbor. As this tradition lost popularity over the years, it was replaced with a seaside event called the Harbor Festival. In 2002, the Harbor and Seafood Festival was newly created and moved to the fall of the year to coincide with lobster season to support local fisherman.
This popular event offers you and your family a great opportunity to meet and talk with the local commercial fishermen while enjoying the freshest seafood from the Santa Barbara Channel.
There will be over 40 arts and crafts vendors selling jewelry, clothing, art, photography and other handcrafted items.
The UCSB Marine Science Institute will provide a unique display featuring a mobile REEF touch tank filled with sea life found in the channel. Stopping by this exhibit will give you and your children the chance for an interactive, hands-on experience, as well as the opportunity to learn about the history and biology of these local sea creatures.
Festivalgoers can also take a tall ship tour of the 94-year old Ranger, the Tall Ship Spirit of Dana Point, and the United States Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin. There will be free boat rides available, dockside tours, and the Maritime Museum will be presenting free films and exhibits.
Live entertainment will be provided…performed by FISH and the Seaweeds, The Ride, and Spencer the Gardener. And for those who want to join, there will even be a sea shanty sing-along!
Best of all…..Admission for this all day event is FREE.
After a full day of salt air and entertainment, On the Alley, located right on Harbor Way, offers a convenient option for quick, quality food ‘to go’ or picnic table dining where you can sit and take in one last view of the beautiful Santa Barbara harbor before heading home.
